Invisible Republic Vol 3 eBook Gabriel Hardman Corinna Bechko Jordan Boyd
4.5 starsThis is a complex science fiction/political thriller that takes place in 2843 (in both this and the 2nd volumes of this series, there have been numerous flashbacks to 2801 as well). As Earth became more and more polluted and resources became scarce, humanity sent a giant ship into space. The ship was full of only women (some where pregnant, some later had pre-made embryos put inside of them). These women lived their entire lives on the ship, but the next generation landed on the planet Aslan and its moons (Avalon and Kent). Despite being completely genetically similar to Earthlings, a few characters make the argument that culture defines us as much (or more) than genes, and that the settlers of these new worlds were very different than people from Earth.
Some of the cultures in 2843 are matriarchal (think what having nothing about women around for 20 years does to a culture and its power structure). All of which I've written is background that comes as brief asides but should help the reader make sense of the story. The main plot line is that Arthur McBride (who does not appear in this volume at all) went from being a laborer to a prisoner to a political leader to (some say) a harsh dictator. The stories from 2801 tell both his and his cousins' (Maia) struggles and rise. The events of 2843 center around various political factions that are fighting for power/freedom.
For people that have studied and thought about politics, economics, war, and culture, you'll probably very much enjoy this. The stories do not work as a stand alone, and if you are expecting to be satisfied at the end of this volume with a complete arc, you will be massively disappointed. Despite being a comic, this feels very much like a novel with an ambitious world building storyboard. If the next six volumes are as well thought out and paced as the first three, when this is collected in one, two or three massive volumes and read all at once, it will be very highly regarded indeed.

Invisible Republic Vol 3 eBook Gabriel Hardman Corinna Bechko Jordan Boyd Reviews
Following on from Volume 2, this volume deals with more of the aftermath of Maia's journal and meeting hazards along the way while flashbacks tell us about Maia's history in this science fiction story about a totalitarian regime on Asan's moon (called Maidstone or Avalon depending on the era), formerly run by Maia's former associate, Arthur.
The plot gets quite complicated as it is difficult to know who to trust and no character emerges as hugely sympathetic. Although interesting and well-told, it's hard work in the digital edition (see below).
I do get annoyed at stories which chop and change from flashback to present day every few pages it destroys continuity and is not really necessary. It happens every couple of pages which is tiring.
The story will continue in a fourth volume and it is worth a look, especially if you've more patience than I have.
One of the best comics around, don't miss out!
