Alexandra Monroe is a slave smuggler, smuggling slaves north where they can live as free people. Her crime is sedition and her punishment, if caught, is death. The daughter of one of the wealthiest men in Montgomery, Alexandra lives a life not by her own accord, but a life she willingly accepts for her secret quest to save the lives of slaves.
One afternoon, Alexandra comes face-to-face with handsome William Graysden. Although forbidden for his Creek Indian heritage, he captivates her. They fascinate one another, and ultimately find in each other a bond they don't wish to ignore. After a series of events, however, William must face the choice to continue the dangerous pursuit of Alexandra's affections or forget about her.

I have a real weak spot for historical fiction, but I haven't read much of it lately, so picking this one up and reading it was my choice completely. It's been on my kindle for quite a while, like many of the books I will be reading over this writing break I'm taking. I'm glad to get back to my favorite genre, and this book was a great way to return.Set in the building civil war, Alexandra doesn't sympathize with her Alabama wealthy family roots. Instead, she loves the slave woman who raised her more than her own mother, and secretly smuggles slaves out of the state. While to the outside world, she's the well-bred daughter of a highly respected family, and her hand is being sought after by an even wealthier young man.
But Alexandra knows she can't live in a loveless marriage, despite how much her parents push the young man on her, turning a blind eyes to his less than savory characteristics. Instead, she falls in love with a Native American man, William, who is everything her intended lacks, but also everything she's not allowed to have.
Since I have my own Native American man who I love and married, I naturally felt connected with Alexandra's love and attraction to William. It saddened me to watch them struggle against not only her world, but his as well to be together. They were a couple who matched up brilliantly, Although, their love didn't build up how I would have liked, rather they kind of jumped from avoiding one another to kissing in the blink of an eye. I wish there had been a little more sneaking around and love letters to really build up the connection.
But the story does do a wonderful job of expressing the horrors of slavery and prejudice in the Southern United States at that time. It's a time I'm truly glad I don't live in, and Alexandra did well to overcome the struggles she faced and continued to stand by her beliefs and not break and conform, which ultimately saved many lives. It's also a great story where the bad guy gets his in the end!

The Woman on the Painted Horse edition by Angela Christina Archer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Sorry but this story is just too unbelievable, even for fiction. It's based on a well to do southern girl falling in love with an Indian instead of the chosen rich partner picked for her. At the same time her brother falls in love with a slave girl during a time when feelings like that would have been abhorrent to all. Her selfish decisions and actions have drastic effects on everyone. It reminded me of a teenager just trying to get her own way, the heck with everyone else.
I love historical fiction and this book fits the bill. The amazing story of one white woman, barely more than a child risking life and reputation to help slaves to freedom while finding true love for herself.
This is not an easy book to read due to the harsh values of several of the characters caught up in the struggles in the south. The realities of slavery both for the slaves bought and sold and for the native Americans subjugated without a master by the mindset of the white community were not sugar coated by this author. But our author gives us a strong willed, caring, activist heroine who inspired me to want to live life true to my conviction that each soul deserves to be valued.
This book was a vet well written story about love, heartache, pain, and survival. I readily enjoyed the historical footprints throughout the story that gave the reader a glimpse of life in the south during the slave runs. It also helps the reader understand the hatred, prejudice and racism of the day. If you like historical fiction and love a beautiful romance, I suggest you read this book. Well done!
It took me a while to finish this book. Kept waiting for that ah ha moment and when it finally came in chapter 25 I got really confused. Almost like half the chapter was missing. Last we saw our hero he was tied up and the bad fiance was running off with the heroine to her dad. Then the hero suddenly appears to save the day with no explanation as to how he got there. Then there is the confusion as to how and where the rest of the characters got to where they are at the end.... I kept going back a few pages to see how I missed so much...
I started out excitedly reading this novel but soon lost interest. In fact, it took me several months to finally finish it. I felt the author treated the main characters like cardboard cutouts there was no real life to them and they acted very stereotypically. Also, I thought that the plot would jerk forward at times leaving out important details. Finally, the plot seemed too far-fetched to have happened in the deep south. Would a plantation owner's daughter really have been a slave runner and married a Native American man? And after William killed Thomas with an arrow I do not think that he would have remained alive. Other plantation owners would have hunted him down and killed him in real life, I believe.
I could feel the brutality that kept tearing Alexandra 's life apart. Her narcissistic parents and satanic fiancé. Her Brother , John trying to help her as best he could but he was woefully ignorant of all the many secrets there were in her life. Add to that his love for a slave girl, was all too vivid in this exceptional novel of betrayal in the worse ways.An 18 year old southern belle during the civil war. Living in Alabama,Alexandrea fell in love with William , a Muscogee Indian brave and helped runaway slaves , this book is brutally realistic. 5 stars
